i’ve actually been studying feminist theory for years now and i politely disagree. by definition, a feminist is someone who supports feminism. this “feminist is a term that only women can claim” thing is something that i’ve only heard on tumblr in recent years and i feel that it’s harmful because 1) it draws a line in gender equality and 2) it’s inconsiderate to those who are trans, intersex, gender fluid, or literally anyone who doesn’t comfortably fit into the ridiculous binary.
with that said, it’s a word, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with your preference. my rule of thumb is simply refer to me as whatever makes you the most comfortable. still, i have to question whether this preference actually benefits or unknowingly holds back a movement i’m passionate about. feminism isn’t a line in the sand that only certain people can cross, it’s an ideology that you carry with you and represent in whatever role you already play in society, whether that be a straight male, transgendered cutie, etc. you can be the human embodiment of a fucking mario mystery box, it shouldn’t matter.
to me, based on everything i’ve learned about feminism, the simple idea that only (specific gender) can do or be (anything at all) is very antifeminist. destroying the patriarchy benefits us all.
